JAPAN’S DOLPHIN DRIVES – AN UPDATE

JAPAN’S DOLPHIN DRIVES – AN UPDATE

It’s important to get the full story from the source. Australia for Dolphins (AFD) has been responsible for the legal challenge against WAZA ( World Aquarium and Zoological Association) which has resulted in the JAZA ( Japanese Aquarium and Zoological Association) an associate of WAZA agreeing to give up buying dolphins from the drives for ALL JAZA aquariums.

This has, effectively, stopped 40% of the trade.   However, aquariums in Indonesia and South Korea have bought dolphins from drives in Japan and the pressure is now on these aquariums – which are members of WAZA – to end the trade.

If these WAZA associates continue efforts to buy dolphins from Taiji, then there will almost certainly be action to expel them from WAZA and this is likely to impact on any respectability or credentials that these dolphin jails claim.

Australia for Dolphins has done a magnificent job in targeting WAZA, an organisation that has continued to assert for years that they have no power to enforce their code of ethics .   Thanks to AFD, a hard working, dedicated organisation specialising in focusing on lateral ways to end this horrific trade, the trade is now in grave jeopardy and likely to end.

The downside is that countries like the Solomon Islands may step into the gap.   However global outrage over these dreadful drives is no incentive for governments , even if they are corrupt.

Australia For Dolphins works against the slaughter of dolphins and small cetaceans.  Their website is: www.afd.org.au

CONGRATULATIONS TO AUSTRALIA FOR DOLPHINS – A MIGHTY JOB !
