BOB IRWIN FOUNDATION LETTER TO TONY BURKE ON INDIGENOUS HUNTING

BOB IRWIN WILDLIFE FOUNDATION

To   The Right Honourable Tony Burke MP,

Minister for Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities

Dear Sir,

We write to you today on behalf of the recently formed animal coalition (list attached).

This coalition consists of some of the largest leading animal rights groups in Australia.

It was formed because each and every one of them considers this issue urgent and necessary.

We consider the hunting allowed under the Native Title Act 1993 to be seriously outdated.

The Act is now twenty years old and we believe it has not evolved with the current thinking in today’s world.

We believe that no Australian should hunt endangered or vulnerable marine or wildlife in Australia.

“We therefore call for an urgent change to the Native Title Act 1993, so that any endangered or vulnerable animal or marine life is excluded from hunting by any means, for any reason.”

We all think the Act should be altered to protect any native wildlife that moves onto protected status.

We plan on sending your response to all members of the animal coalition and asking them to share your Government’s response on all of their sites.

We also ask that the response comes directly from you and not a nominated staffer as we think your response could be crucial to the direction we give our united members at the coming election.

Yours sincerely,

Bob Irwin and Colin Riddell
